Reason #3: We Need Each Other to Cross the Finish Line

This summer I had the privilege of being a mentor for Sole Train!  Words cannot express my experience, both as an athlete and as a person.  We started off as mentors and youth, most of whom did not know one another, but all of whom wanted to run the BAA Half Marathon.  By the time the fall came around, it was as if we had known each other for years.  Along the way we learned about nutrition and running techniques. Most importantly, we learned about each other as we made the ever lengthening runs along the Charles River.  Thanks to Jess Leffler and others who helped organize Sole Train, we completed one of the biggest athletic challenges a person can be given.  Not only did we do it with smiles and constant encouragement by other Sole Train members, but we were a force to be reckoned with as we put one foot in front of the other until we all reached the finish line.  While I truly couldn’t ask for a better group of mentors to run with, the youth should be commended for their perseverance, humor and poise. Running 13.1 miles is no small feat!  The young man I was fortunate enough to run with for the Half Marathon said that he couldn’t have gotten through the race without the mentors by his side.  Little did he know that the mentors felt the same way.  We couldn’t have gotten through it without the youth of Sole Train.  Looking forward to Sole Train 2012!
